A Summer Secret Garden wedding theme - and a starring role for some of our lovely designer wedding dresses!

I had great fun at Barnett Hill in Surrey back in the Spring to take part in a styled wedding shoot, the brainchild of Gilly Keat from Amore Star Events who brought together a great bunch of fellow wedding professionals, including the talented wedding photographer, Elton Mogg.

Hope you love the images as much as we do! The featured dress our model is wearing is by Maggie Sottero - one of your favourite designers, you keep telling us. I love this dress too!

We're all really delighted that this magical shoot has been featured on Boho Weddings. You can see more of the images and read the inspiration behind the shoot there.

What are our best-selling wedding dresses?

Choosing a wedding dress can be an agonising decision – for the bride, the bride’s mother, the bride’s best friend, for all of us trying to help! But sometimes a wedding dress ends up choosing the bride – that dress on a hanger that is reluctantly tried on or liked far less than others often proves to be 'The One'. At Amaryllis, we never get tired of seeing the look of happiness that spreads over a bride’s face as the mirror reveals a perfect dress – it’s a very special moment.

So which wedding dresses are working their magic this season?

Here’s a round up of our best sellers:

Rachelle by Maggie Sottero

This is such an elegant dress! Known as a fit and flare gown, it creates a stunning silhouette – stylishly fitted over the body and flaring out to the floor. The delicate lace and shimmering beaded embellishments accentuate the femininity of this dress, and the detailing – such as covered buttons that neatly disguise the rear zip – really add to the style. For brides who feel less comfortable with a strapless dress there is the option to add lace cap sleeves, thoughtfully designed to look totally integrated rather than an awkward add-on. Rachelle is a dress in which brides of all shapes and sizes look absolutely stunning – believe it or not, the most popular sizes have proved to be 6 and 18!

Justin Alexander 8596

If you’re looking for a touch of classic Hollywood glamour, this dress absolutely has it! Think Lauren Bacall, Elizabeth Taylor, Marilyn Monroe, women who looked effortlessly gorgeous on screen. Justin Alexander’s dress is silky, elegant and sophisticated. The sheer Venice lace Sabrina neckline accents a lovely sweetheart neckline. The fitted bodice with pleated satin cummerbund combines with a trumpet skirt, flaring gently from the knee to create a chapel-length train. The lacy texture adds to the visual interest, and the overall effect really works for more curvy brides  – in fact, we’d go so far as to say that this dress positively celebrates curves. And sales prove our point – the most ordered size is a 14.

Sincerity Bridal 3901

This is a modern take on the traditional ball gown shape, perfect for brides longing for a fairy tale wedding dress. Featuring a beaded bodice with lace sweetheart neckline and basque waist, with a full tulle skirt that brushes the floor, this dress will turn any bride into a princess for a day. The beading adds a stylish sparkle – complete the look with a full-length Swarovski crystal veil for an added wow factor.

Jaden by Ronald Joyce

This beautifully soft chiffon wedding dress has a lovely feminine feel to it. Elegant ruching over the chest, waist and hips looks lovely whatever size you may be, and is very flattering if you feel self-conscious in a body-hugging gown. The sweetheart neckline is complemented by delicate lace cap sleeves. And from the rear, the dress is just stunning. The lace creates a beautiful scooped back, the dress is fastened by an elegant row of covered buttons and the ruched chiffon flows and flares into a short but stylish train. A detachable satin belt with embellishment adds extra detail if you want a little more sparkle.

So what dress might suit you most?

What to wear when you are Mother of the Bride?

It’s getting closer and closer to your darling daughter’s Big Day and you want her to be the most beautiful bride ever (and she will be, naturally). All eyes will be on her, but hang on, you’re mother of the bride – you have quite a big part to play on the day as well. It’s obvious that you’ll be treating yourself to a smart new outfit, but here is where the problem begins. Where do you go and how do you avoid ending up in the same outfit as mother of the groom or another guest? It can feel embarrassing to pass a stranger on the street wearing the same outfit, so for the same thing to happen on an occasion as important as your daughter’s wedding is unthinkable.

Not everyone can splash out on something so expensive and exclusive that no one else would possibly wear.

So here are a few top tips to help make sure that no other guest steals your thunder on the day:
  • Avoid department stores and big chains. Look instead for independent retailers – this may mean leaving your usual shopping territory, and you’ll need to perhaps do some detective work to find them, but you may just stumble upon a boutique shop that is full of wonders.
  • Look at websites such as Preloved. Preloved is used by individuals and businesses alike, so you’ll find a mix of outfits that have been worn once only and are now being sold on and shops that need to sell surplus and old stock. Naturally, searching on sites such as this can be a bit hit and miss. You may find a beautiful outfit, only to discover it will be two sizes too big or small. But keep checking for new listings and you might be lucky – and save a small fortune, too.
  • Just Last Season is where you can find clothing from the Jacques Vert Group that is no longer sold on the high street. Brands include Jacques Vert, Kaliko, Eastex, Dash, PrecisPetite and Planet, all of them are stylish and excellent quality and you could save up to 70% off the recommended retail price.

  • Shop at Oxfam? Yes, really! You’d be amazed what people discard – all kinds of treasures turn up in black bin bags and Oxfam sells some of its more valuable items online. Browse, for instance, their range of vintage dresses – we spotted brands such as Christian Lacroix, Liberty and Oscar de la Renta. If you’re looking for something distinctive or quirky, this could be a great route to explore.
  • Moving on rather neatly from charity shop finds, if you know a good tailor or seamstress – or are handy with a needle yourself – an okay dress in a lovely fabric could be transformed into something sensational with the right skills. Again, alterations are a brilliant way of putting a new spin on a garment – it could be as simple as changing the length or doing something clever with the neckline.
  • The Great British Sewing Bee has shown that there is still a healthy interest in sewing. If you’re that way inclined, why not consider making your dress. You get to choose the style and fabric so it will be totally individual to you.

  •  Whatever you decide to do, don’t forget to think about accessories. This is another great way to make your outfit totally your own. Shoes, hats, bags, belts, jewellery all have the power to make a High Street dress look different. A jacket, wrap or pashmina is also another way of completing your look. And it’s a good idea to avoid buying everything in the same shop – shop around and come up with your own unique combination of accessories. Etsy and Not on the High Street are great sites if you’re looking for special bits and pieces.

Above all else, talk to invited guests who you know may have similar tastes to yourself! Yes, it’s nice to keep your outfit secret until the day of the wedding – and you still can – but it doesn’t hurt to ask a few questions, such as ‘what colour are you wearing?’ or ‘where did you buy your outfit?’ That way, you run far less risk of seeing someone walking towards you in the same outfit.

Happy Shopping!

Finding the perfect dresses for your bridesmaids couldn’t be easier

Dressing your bridesmaids can be almost as difficult as finding the wedding dress of your dreams. No matter what ages your bridesmaids may be, they will all have an opinion of what they do and don’t like, what they will or won’t wear. But the High Street is still a wonderful place to shop, and there is a surprising number of stores that have really captured the market for bridesmaid dresses, so here is a selection of useful shops to check out!

John Lewis

Has a lovely range of traditional-style bridesmaid dresses for little ones and pre-teens. Classy and not too expensive, any of these dresses would work well if you’re planning a traditional wedding. For older, more fashion-conscious bridesmaids, take a look at the dresses that come under the categories of ‘black tie’, ‘wedding guest’ or even ‘night out’. Obviously, these aren’t specifically bridesmaid dresses, but you may find something that fits with your chosen theme or colour palette that will perfectly fit the bill.

John Lewis Bridesmaids Dresses

Marks & Spencer

Also has a pretty range of dresses for bridesmaids and flower girls, with sizes ranging from 1-14 years. They also sell some very sweet little cardigans that are perfect if the weather is likely to be a little chilly.

Coast

Adult bridesmaids and maids of honour should love the dresses in Coast. With one eye on fashion and the other on price, Coast offers a good range of dresses and quite a variety of colours – you can even go really bold with reds and purples!

Coast adult bridesmaid dresses

Monsoon

You can always rely on Monsoon for style and quality. Shopping here takes you into a more expensive price bracket, but the wedding and bridesmaid dresses and accessories really are quite lovely – Monsoon dresses always seems to have little details that just make you fall in love with them. What’s also good is that Monsoon also has a children’s range, so if you have younger bridesmaids there will be plenty of choice for them, too.

TK Maxx

Bargain hunters know that TK Maxx is the place to go for designer outfits and knock-down prices. They don’t stock bridesmaid dresses, so look at their special occasion dresses instead. Turnover is fast, you might find the perfect dress in the wrong size or only one when you want three of the same, but if luck and timing is on your side you could find something fantastic!

NEXT

Next is still a great high street brand to visit. Again, you won’t find a specially designed range for bridesmaids but some of Next’s special occasion dresses could work really well depending on the look you want to achieve. Next also stocks Lipsy, which has some gorgeous dresses that can be worn for other special occasions as well as your wedding.

Prefer to browse from the comfort of your sofa?

ASOS

Has a super range of bridesmaid dresses and they’ve even taken into account that not all women are a perfect 10, with dresses for tall, petite and plus size ladies – how to make them feel gorgeous without spending a fortune!

Twobirds

Twobirds is a really interesting concept. They’ve concentrated on coming up with a handful of dresses in a range of colours that can be worn – wait for it – in multiple ways! Potentially, you could buy the same dress for each of your bridesmaids and they could all look slightly different to each other. It’s a great idea, especially if your bridesmaids are different shapes and sizes, they can experiment and find the style that best suits their body shape.

Two Birds - multi-way bridesmaids dresses

And finally...

For Her and For Him

Specialises in wedding outfits, designing their own ranges in house. You just have to look at the many photographs of weddings sent in by satisfied customers to see how great the bridesmaid dresses are. This company will even work with you to customize dresses for a more unique look – it’s a great service!
